Welcome to the Historic USGS Topographic Map project---a volunteer effort to help the USGS preserve historic topographic maps

This Website provides the coordination and process information for the volunteer community interested in helping the USGS preserve topographic maps (topos) via scanning, thus ensuring their continued availability and use.

Historic topo maps were created using traditional cartographic methods and printed using lithographic printing processes, but they are no longer available in print. With your help, the Historic USGS Topographic Map project will scan the historic topos, catalog them, create metadata for them, and make the catalog, the metadata, and the scanned images available on the Web.

If you are interested in scanning and providing data for topo maps to donate to this volunteer project, here's how to join!

(1) Find out status of scanned or scheduled quadrangles

(2) Notify the Historic Topographic Map cooperative which maps you wish to provide scans of (complete the form "Intend to contribute topographic data")

(3) Follow the required procedures for scanning maps and contributing files
